Project Brief - Madhubani

When we started planning the next chapter of Kala's Art Series, we asked ourselves a simple question:

What makes an art form timeless?

The answer took us to the villages of Mithila, where Madhubani has been passed from one generation to the next for centuries. Every painting tells a story. Some celebrate weddings. Others honour nature, family, faith, or the changing seasons. There is no empty space, every line has a purpose, every colour has meaning, and every symbol is part of a much larger conversation.

As we explored the world of Madhubani, we found ourselves returning to the same two figures over and over again.

The Sun and the Moon.

They appeared in painting after painting, not as background elements, but as silent storytellers. Watching over celebrations, harvests, rituals, nature, and everyday life. Long before clocks and calendars, they were humanity's oldest way of understanding time.

It made us wonder...

What if a watch could capture that feeling? Not by simply printing a piece of art onto a dial, but by bringing the story itself to life.

That question became the beginning of our most ambitious project yet. Over the past several months, we've been working closely with Madhubani artists to study the symbolism, stories, and visual language that have defined this art form for generations. Every line, every motif, and every detail has been carefully considered, not to recreate tradition, but to reinterpret it in a way that feels authentic, meaningful, and alive.

This is not just a watch inspired by Madhubani. It is our attempt to transform one of India's oldest storytelling traditions into an experience you can wear. And just like the skies that inspired these paintings centuries ago, this watch has a story that slowly reveals itself over time.

Some details will catch your eye the moment you see it. Others you'll only discover after living with it.

Over the coming days, we'll be taking you behind the scenes, sharing the artists, the research, the craftsmanship, and the thinking that shaped every decision.

We'll also reveal the complete specifications, pricing, and launch date.

This is more than our next release. It may be our most poetic interpretation of time yet.
