Why Indian Microbrands Are Changing the Game (And Why We Joined In)

A few years ago, if you asked someone about Indian watches, chances are they’d only name Titan, HMT, or Fastrack. But today, something different is happening; small, independent microbrands are redefining what an “Indian watch” can be. And honestly? It’s about time.

Each brand is carving its own identity, and as collectors ourselves, we couldn’t be happier. Let’s take a quick tour through the ones we love before we tell you why we decided to throw our hat into the ring.

Kshan Watch Co – Aquaria

Kshan’s Aquaria is a dive watch that could easily swim with the big boys. Built tough, finished beautifully, and designed with care, it’s proof that high end quality watches don’t always need a Swiss passport. Aquaria feels like a serious tool watch while still looking sleek on the wrist. If you’re into divers, this one deserves a spot on your wishlist.

Ajwain Watches – Kakori 8 Down

Ajwain’s Kakori 8 Down is storytelling on the wrist, a railway-inspired timepiece with a gorgeous enamel dial that feels like a slice of history captured on the wrist. Ajwain is also known for using Devanagari script in other models, a thoughtful way of tying their designs back to Indian roots.

And while we’re at it, shoutout to Shaw Watches Manta, and the Pyko’s 42; proof that the Indian microbrand scene is buzzing with variety.

And Then… There’s Us, Kalā Watch Co.

So why did we start Kala Watch Co.? Simple: we love watches, and we love art. We didn’t want to just make “another nice watch.” We wanted each piece to carry a soul, a design that connects to a bigger story.

We’re not just building watches, we’re crafting stories you can wear. Every piece we design begins with an idea rooted in art, culture, and craftsmanship. We believe a watch should do more than tell time; it should connect you to something timeless.

Built and assembled in India, every Kalā watch celebrates craftsmanship in its truest sense; refined, balanced, and made for those who appreciate stories hidden in the details. While our first chapter begins with the ancient Warli art form, it’s only the start. Ahead, we envision timepieces inspired by diverse expressions, from the bold geometry of Bauhaus to the delicate flow of Ikat and the quiet grace of Japanese ink paintings.

Kalā is a celebration of heritage and modernity, of artistry meeting engineering. Every watch we create will be a small canvas, carrying forward the story of creativity in a form you can wear every day.
