Powered by Precision: Why We Chose the Seiko VK64Mechaquartz
Every Kalā watch tells a story and while the dial gets all the attention, the real magic is ticking quietly inside. For our debut model, we chose the Seiko VK64 movement. Why? Because it’s reliable, efficient, and just a little bit mechanical at heart.
Mechaquartz
It sounds fancy. But here’s the simple breakdown:
The VK64 is a mechaquartz movement, a hybrid of quartz accuracy and mechanical feel. It’s powered by a battery (hello, low maintenance) but when you use the chronograph function, you’ll feel a satisfying mechanical snap and see a smooth sweeping seconds hand.
It’s like having a mechanical watch that doesn’t need winding and won’t complain if you don’t wear it for a few days.
Key Features
- Chronograph Timer: Press the top pusher to start the stopwatch. Times up to 60 minutes. Great for workouts or timing how long you’ve been staring at your screen.
- 24-Hour Sub-Dial: Helps you keep track of am/pm. Especially helpful if you’ve just woken up and are unsure what year it is.
- No Running Seconds: The main time display doesn’t tick. It stays smooth and still, keeping the dial clean and distraction-free.
Why We Love It
- Reliable: Built by TMI (part of Seiko Group), the VK64 is used by brands around the world. It’s dependable. Like that one friend who’s never late.
- Low Maintenance: No winding. No fuss. Just a battery change every couple of years.
- Mechaquartz: You get the joy of a mechanical chronograph without the cost or stress of a mechanical movement. The pushers are tactile, the chronograph resets sharply, and the sweeping hand is just…satisfying.
How to Use It Like a Pro
Start Timer: Press the top pusher (2 o’clock)
Stop Timer: Press it again
Reset Timer: Press the bottom pusher (4 o’clock) and watch the chrono hand snap back like it’s on a mission.
*Slight delay when the hand starts? Totally normal. It’s thinking. Give it a second.
Care Tips (a.k.a. How Not to Upset Your Watch)
- Keep It Dry: Light splashes are fine, but it’s not a swimmer.
- Avoid Magnets: No fridge door photoshoots. Magnets can mess with its accuracy.
- Battery Life: Typically lasts 2–3 years. If the chronograph stops responding, it might be time for a new battery.
- Clean Gently: Wipe with a soft cloth. No fancy chemicals. Just love and lint-free fabric.
One Last Thing
At Kalā, we don’t just care about how things look. We care about how they work, how they’re made, and what they stand for. The VK64 isn’t just the movement of our watch, it’s part of the story we’re telling with every watch and we strive to deliver only the best.
