The word Kala has many interpretations. For us, it means art, time, and dream. Weaving the meanings from Sanskrit (कला – art) and Telugu (కల – dream), and conceptually tied to Kāl (काल – time), Kalā takes its form.
Kalā Watch Co. is a celebration of art through time. Our journey began with Warli, one of India’s oldest art forms, reimagined into our very first watch. We craft each detail with care, blending heritage and modern watchmaking. With every design ahead, from Ikat to Kalamkari, Pixel art to Minakari, we will work hand in hand with local artisans and master artists to bring these art forms to life on the wrist.
Our Story
Kalā Watch Co. began with a spark, a childhood fascination that never faded.
Like many watch lovers, my journey started with my father’s swiss automatic watch. There was something magical about it. The quiet sweep of the seconds hand, the weight on the wrist, the idea that a machine could keep time without a battery! It was love at first sight.
When I landed my first job, the first thing I saved for was my own watch. That one purchase opened the floodgates. What started as a personal want quickly grew into a passionate hobby. I found myself spending countless hours researching microbrands, studying different movements, learning about complications, and getting lost in the science of materials and the art of watchmaking.
Before long, my passion became an obsession. Watch after watch, I immersed myself in the details; learning, collecting, and dreaming.
That dream eventually took shape.
With a head full of ideas and a notebook filled with sketches, I teamed up with a talented designer friend. We spent months crafting concepts, speaking with local artisans, and exploring how we could bring something uniquely Indian to the watch world, something tasteful, modern, and timeless.
In India, we noticed a gap: while there’s no shortage of cultural heritage, the use of Indian design in watches often felt either ornamental or overly traditional. But that’s not the only way Indian aesthetics can be expressed. We looked to India’s emerging streetwear scene, which fuses heritage with modern design so effortlessly, and knew we could do the same in watchmaking.
Kalā was born from this vision, to blend refined craftsmanship with meaningful art forms, and to create watches that meet the standards of global horology, while telling stories rooted in where we come from.
Today, Kalā is an independent microbrand with big dreams. Every watch we release is built with care, designed with intent, and assembled right here in India. And yes, I’m still that same watch nerd, now building the watches I always wished existed.
